Montgomery

Campground

Montgomery South RV & Cabins

This was a nicely maintained park along highway 65 outside Montgomery.  The road noise really wasn't an issue.  Very nice open field for Polly to get exercise.  Clean bathroom/shower rooms and very friendly office staff.  At the exit from 65, there is a DQ, Denny's, Subway, three gas stations.  Did I say there was a DQ there?  Oh yeah.

Things to see

Alabama Safari Park

This was just down the road from our campground.  What a bonus!  A drive-through safari park with all kinds of very friendly (too friendly?) animals you just don't see in the U.S.  Emu, Kangaroo, Llama, wildebeest, water buffalo, camel, and more!  You can buy buckets of food but watch out, some of the animals will grab the entire bucket!

Alabama Shakespeare Festival

We didn't go for Shakespeare, although that would have been fun too.  We went because we heard a radio advertisement for "The Million Dollar Quartet", a show about the gathering of Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis at the Sun Studios in Memphis, TN.  The show was fantastic!  We had visited Sun Studios when we were in Memphis - go have a look!

Downtown Montgomery

There is quite a lot to see walking around downtown.  A lot of civil rights activities from the past - most notably, the Rosa Parks bus incident.  Other famous buildings from the Civil War times and the Hank Williams Museum.

Hank Williams Museum

Good way to spend a hot afternoon and we learned a lot about Hank Williams too.  He died at age 29 from heart failure while sleeping in the back seat of a car on his way to a gig.  He also had spina bifida occulta (incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord) which was not diagnosed or treated as a kid.  He wrote 167 songs in his short life.

Wilderness Park/Bamboo Forest

This was gorgeous!  What happens when you import bamboo plants from China and let them run amok?  They create a beautiful forest right in the middle of Alabama.  Such a treat for the eyes.

Food and Drink

Dreamland BBQ

We read good reviews of this BBQ joint so while walking around downtown Montgomery, we went over for lunch.  The half rack of ribs was not fall-off-the-bone but it was tasty.

El Amigo

Our first question to the lady working in the campground was "Where is your favorite Mexican restaurant?"  We arrived on a Tuesday, so "Margarita Martes"!  This was just at the next exit toward Montgomery and it was pretty good!

Jalapeno in the Alley

Another Tuesday, another "Margarita Martes".  Well, we wanted to check this place out because it is in the "Alley", where a bunch of other eateries and night spots are.  We had lunch so postponed the Margaritas until we got home.  Nice thick salsa and main dinners were quite good.

Parrilla Loca

Another local favorite and we were there on Cinco de Mayo!  Yippee!  Discount margaritas!  The salsa was nice and thick and the food was great!

To make a long story short ...

Traveling nurses

In our travels, we've come across several people that are working remotely, home schooling, etc.  Another couple in our campground introduced themselves and we found out that they are traveling nurses, currently on a contract in Montgomery.  They are here for several months, primarily working the night shift - so we don't see much of them.  They were funny in that they immediately started checking out our website and asked us a bunch of questions about our travels, if Mark will be playing anywhere in the area, etc.
