Carlsbad

Campground

Carlsbad KOA Holiday

It is about 20 miles north of Carlsbad and rather isolated. You'll have to drive to either Carlsbad or Artesia for the closest stores and such. There is, at times, a NASTY smell in the air. It seems to be the water. Water? The water is SUPER hard. Our water softener wouldn't touch it. As with all KOAs, this campground is very well maintained. We were there during Halloween and there was a cute trick-or-treat party and parade. There are some trails between the campground and Brantley Lake but beware of snakes.

Brantley Lake State Park was actually closed even though the signs said it should have been open. Granted, it was during the height of COVID so that could have been the issue.

Things to see

Carlsbad Caverns

It is like the underground Grand Canyon. Seriously, a must-see. You've read about it. You've seen pictures. Just go see it.

Hackberry Lakes Sand Dunes

Beautiful sand dunes in a place you just wouldn't expect them. A great place for ATV/UTV riders! Polly absolutely loved running on the dunes. There are covered picnic areas and it was a great place for us to hang out and enjoy the sun and warmth.

Roswell

You can't be this close and not go visit Roswell. UFO and alien images all over the place. The UFO Museum is a must-see.
