Chincoteague Island KOA Resort

Like all KOA locations, this is well maintained. Being a "resort", there are many amenities. However, we were here a bit off-season (November) so there weren't many visitors to the campground and there weren't many businesses in the surrounding area even open. Also, take into consideration that we were also traveling during the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic so there was an abundance of caution taken by everyone. NOTE - it looks like this KOA is now a Jellystone Park campground.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

We drove and biked the road through the refuge in hopes of seeing the wild horses. We were not lucky enough to see them but enjoyed the ride anyway.

To make a long story short ...

Know how tall your RV is

No, we didn't have a problem with this but we can certainly imagine a very serious problem. There are multiple ways to get to Chincoteague Island. One way is through a tunnel which is a major highway. I'm sure trucks and RVs of all sizes whiz right through it. However, as you enter the tunnel at 70 MPH, you see a sign that says "maximum height 13'6". Well, we happened to measure our camper a while ago and it is 13'3". Do we believe we had a whole 3" to spare? Cross your fingers and, naturally, duck as you enter the tunnel (like that's going to do any good). Needless to say, we made it. Drenched in sweat, but we made it. Okay, not really sweating. We were just a little anxious.
